The curricula of both departments start with introductory courses for basic subjects (such as mathematics, physics, and computer science) and liberal arts subjects that foster a broader approach to study.

There are also a number of overview lectures. For example, "Introduction to Systems Information Science I" is a compulsory course for all 1st year students, giving them omnibus lectures about what they can expect to learn at FUN. Also, "Basics of Information Design" is a compulsory subject for all Media Architecture freshmen, focusing on how design skills can be used to handle various kinds of information (audio-visual, text, human body, color, shape and texture of physical objects as well virtual objects).

Future University-Hakodate also has a unique "Communication" course that is compulsory for all 1st and 2nd year students. This course aims to improve communication skills by using English as a method of communication to acquire a logical ability to think and skills of persuasive expression.

The University also provides a variety of Liberal Arts subjects such as gContribution to Society", "Human Development", and "Science, Technology & the Environment", which are open to all students from the 1st to the 4th year.
