The School of Systems Information Science

The School of Systems Information Science consists of two departments: Complex Systems and Media Architecture. Emerging as a new field in the middle of the 20th century, information science research was principally focused on the processes for combining the technologies of hardware and software. Hardware was for storing and processing large amounts of data, while the software controlled the hardware.
As we live in the first decade of the 21st century, computers are increasingly embedded in our lives, and the technologies we use, forming the beginnings of a massively complex and globally linked ubiquitous information system. Understanding this global network calls for knowledge about massively complex systems. Mobile phones and humanoid robots are now designed with in-depth knowledge of social mechanisms and human behavior.
It is recognized at Future University - Hakodate that such information systems cannot be isolated from peoples’ lives and behaviours and society at large. Accordingly, courses offered at FUN cover a wide area, from large complex interactive systems to human-oriented design. We invite you to experience FUN; to play your part in the designing of new global-oriented lifestyles suitable for the 21st century.
As the 20th century progressed, the performance of computer hardware pushed forward relentlessly. Combined with new network technologies, this heralded the start of the so-called IT (Information Technology) revolution - now taken for granted.
