General Rules

Schedule of Contest

In Japan, the contest will be held in three steps.

  1. Preliminary Contest (for Japanese contestants on the Internet, 23 Sep),
  2. Asia Regional Contest (i.e., the Hakodate contest) (10-11 Nov.)
  3. The contest world final.

Interpreter

English is the official language of the contest. In the Hakodate contest, there is no interpreter. All questions and official discussions should be done in English.

Rules about selection of entry teams, winning teams and teams for world final.

Maximum number of teams for Hakodate contest: 35

At most 8 of these teams can be from outside Japan, with a limit of 2 teams from one university or college. Teams registering early are given priority, to enable early commencement of visa application procedures.

As a formula, if we denote the number of teams from outside Japan as F, then the maximum number of teams from Japan, M (= 35-F), can be expressed as:
27 <= M <= 35.

How to select entry teams from Japan

Teams are selected from those teams that solve at least one problem in the Preliminary Contest. The team selection process is as follows.

Process 1. Teams are evaluated in order of the score (teams with the best score are evaluated first). The rules for actually selecting a team for the Hakodate Contest are then:

Rule 1: If the number of teams selected so far is less than 10, the team is selected, provided there are less than three teams already selected from that team's university.

Rule 2: If the number of teams selected so far is less than 20, the team is selected, provided there are less than two teams already selected from that team's university.

Rule 3: If number of the selected teams is less than M (maximum number of the teams from Japan), the team is selected if no teams have yet been selected from that team's university.

Process 2. If number of the selected teams is less than M after process 1, the remaining unselected teams are again evaluated in order of the score, using rule 4.

Rule 4: If the number of selected teams is less than M, the team is selected if the number of teams selected already from the team's university is less than 3.

If the number of selected teams is still less than M after process 1 and process 2, further teams will be selected by the Steering Committee until number of the selected teams is M.

Process 3. If any selected teams drop out of the contest, additional teams are selected from the unselected teams as follows:

The teams are evaluated in order of score with process 1 and process 2, but using the rules 1', 2', 3' and 4' below to replace rule 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Rule 1': If the number of teams already selected with a score better than the team is less than 10, the team is selected, provided there are less than three teams already selected from the team's university.

Rule 2': If the number of teams already selected with a score better than the team is less than 20, the team is selected, provided there are less than two teams already selected from the team's university.

Rule 3': If the number of teams already selected with a score better than the team is less than M, the team is selected if no teams have yet been selected from that team's university.

Rule 4': If the number of teams already selected with a score better than the team is less than M, the team is selected if the number of teams selected already from the team's university is less than 3.

Award in Hakodate Contest

1. The team that has the best score is nominated for the World Contest Final.

2. The teams that are ranked top ten are awarded a prize. The scoring system for the contest uses the same evaluation rules as the Asia regional contest.

3. Additional wildcard teams are decided by the Steering Committee.

Participation in contests at other sites

Teams that achieve an excellent score may be sent to contests at other sites in the Asia region.

If teams selected in this way turn down the opportunity, replacement teams may be selected according to the selection rules for "How to select entry teams from Japan."

Others

The Steering Committee has the final and binding authority to resolve any issues that cannot be unequivocally decided by the above rules.
