仕事の紹介

言語は、計算機が発明される以前からコミュニケーションにおける最も中心的な役割を担ってきました。近年の情報化社会では、計算機を介したコミュニケーションが一般的になってきており、その中でも、メールやブログなど、電子化テキストを通じた言語コミュニケーションの機会が一層増えています。我々は、言語に備わっている様々な特徴や人間の言語の運用メカニズムの解明を目指し、言語を計算機で扱うための各種要素技術と、それに基づいてコミュニケーションを円滑化する技術について研究しています。

(1) 自然言語表現の言い換え

同じ意味内容を表す、同一言語の異なる言語表現は言い換えと呼ばれます。電子化テキストの流通量が増す中、そこから様々な情報・知識を獲得するというニーズが高まっており、言い換えの関係にある表現を「認識する」技術の重要性が指摘されています。一方、人間が相手や状況に応じて言いたいことを色々と言い換えて伝えるように、コミュニケーションを円滑化する上で言い換えを「生成する」技術は重要な役割を担います。我々は、計算機上で言い換えを頑健かつ正確に処理するための機構・資源の開発、および必要な言語知識の効率的な獲得手法について研究しています。また、自然言語処理の諸分野（文書作成・推敲支援、読解支援、質問応答、情報検索、テキストマイニング、文章生成、要約、機械翻訳など）への応用方法について検討しています。

(2) ウェブ・テキストの活用技術

ウェブの普及により、電子化テキストが生産される速度は劇的に高まりました。ある筋によれば、毎月数百万件のブログ記事が書かれているそうです。ウェブ上に存在する数十〜数百億ページの電子化テキストは、言葉の誤用や顔文字などのノイズを含むものの、人間の経験や感情、言語感覚が表出したデータとみなすことができます。一方、ブログやチャットのように、時空を簡単に超えられるウェブならではの言語コミュニケーションも見られるようになってきました。このように、ウェブ上のテキストは非常に興味深い研究対象であり、これを工学的・科学的に研究することには大きな意義があります。我々は、ウェブ・テキストから未知の知を発見する手法、および得られた知識を活用した新たな技術・サービスについて研究しています。
