At Future University Hakodate, we are working on a research project called "Marine IT," which integrates information science and the marine field.2004 2004 This ongoing challenge has been driven by the combined efforts of faculty members with diverse expertise in areas such as information technology, design, and environmental science. It has now become a pioneering initiative that is connected to the nation's "Smart Fisheries" program.
For example, we use data from fishing boats and fixed nets to analyze which fishing methods are environmentally friendly, and AI to identify fish species from fish finder images. By using IoT technology that sends information in real time from buoys floating in the sea, we aim to connect the experience of fishermen with data and realize sustainable fisheries.
The appeal of Future University lies in the opportunity to utilize knowledge of information science to tackle "social and regional challenges." Our "Marine IT" initiative, which connects the sea and technology, is one such example, aiming to transform the future of the region.
