Discovery of a mechanism for selective information propagation based on traveling electrocortical waves

Research

A joint research group led by Professor Naoyuki Sato of Future University Hakodate, Professor Riki Matsumoto of the Department of Clinical Neurology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, Professor Akio Ikeda of the Department of Epilepsy and Movement Disorder Physiology, Kyoto University, Akihiro Shimotake, Director of Clinical Research, Utano National Hospital, and Assistant Professor Mayumi Otani of the Department of Neurology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University, analyzed the progression waves of cortical electroencephalograms during cognitive task performance and for the first time revealed that global progression waves are independent of the cognitive task, and that the strength of synchronization between local electroencephalograms and progression waves changes in task-related brain regions.
