About the university

"An Unfinished Future"
Our university's philosophy of "Open Space, Open Mind" is not merely an architectural feature of our open campus with glass walls and no partitions; it is the very essence of our educational and research approach, which emphasizes learning and collaboration without being confined by the boundaries of specialization or position.
Rather than resting on our laurels with what has worked so far, continuously asking "Isn't there a better way?" has been a crucial driving force behind our progress since the university's founding. In this President's message, we will introduce the challenges of learning that arise from our university's expertise and environment.

Wall-less spaces foster empathy and cooperation
The open space without walls
It is the origin and symbol of Mirai University.
A campus where students can "see each other" and maximize the potential for communication is essential for realizing a truly open learning environment that is characteristic of Mirai University.
Currently, active learning is also recommended by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Our campus was designed ahead of its time, incorporating the concepts of active learning and learning commons, making it a cutting-edge educational environment that is sometimes considered a model campus suitable for active learning.
Please also take a look at the video series "Future University in Video," which introduces the university's location and the interior of the building.
Architectural design by Riken Yamamoto
Our university campus was designed by architect Riken Yamamoto, who received the “Pritzker Architecture Prize”, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture, in March 2024. The campus has also won numerous awards in the past, including the 2001 Hokkaido Red Brick Architecture Award and the 2002 Architectural Institute of Japan Award.
