FUN Open University ② Pattern Recognition

Recent advancements in information science have made it possible for us to obtain vast amounts of data across various fields. Data science is a new academic field that seeks to uncover new meanings, values, laws, and relationships from this enormous amount of data.

At Future University Hakodate, which explores information science, we have established a curriculum (Data Science Open Program) as a specialized field where you can deeply study data science. This lecture is a restructured version of the introductory material for our students.

In this lecture, we will learn about "pattern recognition," a field within data science.

About pattern recognition

Pattern recognition is the process of selecting and extracting certain features or regularities from vast amounts of data, such as images and sounds. It is a type of natural information processing that enables computers to perform intelligent behaviors that humans and some animals can do quite naturally. For example, when a person sees an apple, they can instantly recognize it as an apple because the brain processes the information received from the eyes in combination with past data; this is also a form of pattern recognition that humans perform naturally.
Currently, pattern recognition encompasses various types such as "face recognition," "character recognition," and "speech recognition," and is being utilized in a wide range of applications. It is a field that is expected to be a major theme in future research and development in artificial intelligence.

My research focuses on "autonomous robots" that can think and act on their own, under the theme of "robots that people love." My love for video game characters as a child led me down the path of autonomous robotics and machine learning research. Realizing a childhood dream is a perfectly valid research objective. I hope that students will also clearly define what they want to do and move forward with confidence towards it.
