Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems

Deciphering the complex world and creating the intelligence of the future.
The Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems aims to understand the mechanisms of complex systems such as those in nature, life, society, and cognition, and to create new intelligent systems by combining this understanding with mathematics and information technology. The phenomena studied are diverse, as listed below, and these are viewed as "systems," with patterns, structures, and behaviors being scientifically explored.

Complex systems science integrates mathematical sciences and computer science, dealing with "complexity" such as nonlinearity, adaptation, evolution, interaction, and emergence. Our university was one of the first in Japan to introduce this field into undergraduate education. Research on "intelligence" extends beyond artificial intelligence to encompass scientific and philosophical inquiries into fields such as cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, developmental science, behavioral science, biology, artificial life, language science, and cognitive robotics, all aimed at understanding the mechanisms behind the intellectual abilities of humans and other organisms.
Therefore, the Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems explores the following broad academic fields:
- Mathematical Modeling and Complex Systems Science
- AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning
- Data science
- Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Psychology, Developmental Research
- Biology, life systems, artificial life
- Simulation of swarms, interactions, and emergence
- Analysis of multi-agent models and social systems
- Intelligent robots, intelligent agents, cognitive robotics
Through these activities, students develop the ability to analyze, predict, model, design, and realize complex phenomena as intelligent systems.
The Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems is a department that strives to understand the complex world and create intelligent systems that will support future society, by bridging the gap between Natural Sciences, Cognitive Science, Mathematical Sciences, and Artificial Intelligence.
