Meta-Learning Lab

Cultivate students' one-on-one learning and teaching skills

Meta Learning Lab (commonly known as MetaLab) is a place where students provide learning support. Tutors who are academically excellent and enthusiastic about teaching,One-on-one instruction on how to study at universityWe will provide support.
The tutoring staff consists of approximately 15 students ranging from second-year undergraduates to Graduate School students. They handle around 150 consultations per year, primarily focusing on programming and mathematics.
Students (Tuties) who have problems such as "I can't solve the problems in the textbook" or "My programming assignments aren't working the way I want them to" come to the Meta Learning Lab for advice.

Aiming to be an independent learner

The Meta Learning Lab aims to help tutors become independent learners, enabling them to solve problems on their own. In tutoring sessions, tutors are shown specific learning methods (such as how to interpret textbooks and how to understand concepts through diagrams), and are encouraged to think about and practice problem-solving techniques. Through this support, tutors not only learn how to learn and solve problems, but also gain confidence in their learning abilities.

As a place to learn from each other

The Meta-Learning Lab is a learning opportunity not only for tutees but also for tutors.
At our university, we have introduced an open badge certification system to promote the growth of our tutors. Furthermore, supervising faculty members provide individualized support tailored to each tutor's personality, including instruction in necessary learning theories and tutoring skills. Tutors can gain practical experience in learning support by participating in learning support training programs structured based on international standards. This allows tutors to grow significantly as well. (The photo on the right shows a tutor training session.)
This is also a place where we can learn from each other and grow ourselves and others.

What are Open Badges?

Open Badges are a digital certification and authentication system issued in accordance with globally recognized technical standards. Based on blockchain technology, they certify knowledge and skills. MetaLearning Lab issues Open Badges (see diagram) such as Proficient Tutor, indicating completion of a certain training program; Expert Tutor, indicating being a skilled tutor; and Leader Tutor, indicating a leadership role within MetaLearning Lab.
