Research Projects
Communication through sound involves various "musical" elements, such as music and prosody. We are researching the perception, production, and development of sounds containing these musical elements, as well as the influence of musical sounds on communication with others, using both behavioral and neurophysiological indicators.
The research I am currently conducting is as follows:
- The impact of timing expression during musical collaborations on perceptual processes and social evaluation.
- Musical elements and their effects in communication between infants and caregivers
- Development of musical and spoken language perception and expression in hearing-impaired children with cochlear implants and hearing children.
- The impact of musical experience on auditory perception and other cognitive performance.
- Development of educational materials using music to improve pitch perception in people with hearing impairments, and verification of their effectiveness.
The appeal of research
Lullabies are found in all cultures around the world, and people dedicate considerable resources to music. Research into musical communication and musical perception and cognition is crucial for understanding human development and cognition.
Achievements
We were the first to experimentally demonstrate that infants show a stronger interest in songs than in their mothers' speech, showing that music plays a crucial role in human development.
While cochlear implants are effective for understanding spoken language, they were previously considered ineffective for understanding music and the prosody of spoken language, which require accurate processing of pitch information. However, through collaborative research with medical researchers and experts, we have for the first time reported that children with cochlear implants can identify known songs and produce the rhythm of songs with statistically comparable accuracy to hearing children.

Research Contents
My main focus of research concerns how different features of music and prosodic speech influence the way people perceive sound, communicate, and acquire new skills using both behavioral and neurophysiological (EEG) techniques. Questions we investigate include:
- Effects of timing expression on perceptual processing and social evaluation during musical interaction.
- Musicality in caretaker-infant interaction
- Music and speech perception and production by users of cochlear implants
- Effects of music on auditory perception and social perception
- Music training to enhance sound perception for users of cochlear implants
Attractive Factors of My Research
Understanding how people communicate by ‘musical’ sounds is an effective way to investigate how human cognition and emotion operate.
Achievements
We have shown that infants show preference for music over language. This finding is considered as one important empirical evidence to support the idea that music is an integral part of human development.
With researchers in otolaryngology, speech therapy, and audiology, we have shown that child users of cochlear implants are very musical. Children with cochlear implants typically enjoy singing songs and they can identify familiar songs. We have developed several new testing procedures for music and prosody perception and production for children with cochlear implants. By using these test procedures, we have shown that children with cochlear implants are good at producing rhythmic patterns of familiar songs and imitating speech prosody.
