Message for Students

Please check www.hy-ma.com for more details! I have been working on digital scanning and fabrication for upcycling abandoned resources. Let's transform waste into valuable things by real world-based design.

The title of website, “hybrid materiality” does not mean to mix multiple materials. It implies the new  experiences enabled by blending technologies in materials, OR, extracting material properties/uniquness which are not obvious for humans but for machine eyes.  My research focus is to propose those augmented material experiences that do not interfere with the aesthetic quality developed by designers and architects over years.

Today’s living environments are surrounded by standardized objects and materials that are produced in controlled mass production lines. Spotlighting “non-standard materials” that are mostly abandoned or chipped until qualifying standards, my research explores how to utilize them with as little processing as possible, namely for interior and architecture applications, and aim for proposing methods to design and fabricate with non-standard materials enabled by recent interaction technologies. Prospecting the future, my research envisions the future of non-standard materials with related technologies that become more commonly accepted as another form to consist of living environments.

Attractive Factors of My Research

My research requires you to be fluent in aesthetics as well as technology both. It is necessary to be informed in the history of design in order to discuss how our proposals would affect the modern living environments. For implementing the proposal, you must develop your design or fabrication approach and apply it to actual physical prototypes. These outputs are catchy and intuitive that you can present them to people outside of our domains.
