Graduate school

The Graduate School of Systems Information Science at Future University Hakodate provides an environment where students can further develop their undergraduate research themes and acquire advanced expertise.
Based on five research areas and their interdisciplinary areas, a two-year master’s program is offered to develop advanced knowledge and skills for service design, along with a three-year doctoral program to enhance research expertise across all areas.
Media Architecture
Research in this field aims at the implementation of information systems that focus primarily on the ‘human element’ rather than simply sending and receiving information. Students can learn how to skillfully develop information systems, and how to pursue effective processes to ensure performance and safety.
Characteristics
Students study information media technologies (including audio and image processing), network technologies, sensing technologies, and software development, and engage in broad research in advanced information and communications. They develop an understanding of computer systems and embedded systems that support our information society. They also learn voice, language, and image processing, network and security technologies, and methods for software and information system design, including open technologies. Furthermore, students will acquire the skills to build the information systems necessary for the networked society of the future, and will conduct research that will lead the advanced information and communications society.

ProfessorMedia Design
This area explores new relationships between people, objects, and environments by designing artifacts (media) that fit human behavior. By integrating a broad range of related disciplines, it examines diverse forms of computer-based expression and technologies for human–computer interaction.
Characteristics
Research in this area explores interactions between people, objects, and the environment through the design of information media. Students study fundamental information technologies alongside specialized areas such as information design, interactive systems, and cognitive systems. The program aims to create new relationships between people, objects, and the environment through information technology, and to generate value that enriches society. It prepares graduates to meet societal needs by developing skills in designing user-friendly, intuitive human interfaces and building accessible, effective interactive systems.

ProfessorComplex Systems Information Science
This area focuses on the development of innovative information processing technologies for predicting and controlling interconnected large-scale systems, grounded in information science and the mathematical sciences. Research is conducted collaboratively across disciplines, with information science at its core.
Characteristics
In contemporary society, where complex global networks are increasingly prevalent, the importance of a systems approach informed by complex systems theory continues to grow. The curriculum is designed to develop highly skilled engineers and researchers capable of working in what may be described as a complex information society, fostering both systems-oriented thinking and expertise in information science. Because the knowledge and skills required to address diverse complex systems are wide-ranging, advanced courses are offered to support the acquisition of specialized knowledge, building on strong foundations in mathematics and information science.

ProfessorIntelligent Information and Science
This area combines mathematical sciences, computer science, and interdisciplinary research to investigate human intelligence and construct computational models. Through this process, students explore the realization of higher-order intelligent systems using computers and robotics.
Characteristics
Modern media and communication systems are becoming larger and more complex. Various artificial intelligence techniques are used to enable flexible information processing in such systems and to automatically extract useful information from large amounts of data. Based on this background, students will learn about the theory, design, implementation, and applications of intelligent and autonomous information processing systems and robots. While understanding the research overview and trends in this field, students will also acquire knowledge of artificial intelligence theory, particularly theories and applications focusing on cutting-edge themes such as cognition, adaptation, control, learning, autonomy, and sociality. Furthermore, students will acquire the skills to design and implement intelligent systems.
