There is a word, “attitude of pursuing” is described in the undergraduate diploma policy of Future University Hakodate. It is the attitude that the university hopes graduates of Future University Hakodate acquire before graduation. The attitude can be defined to pursue the problem you face, find out the essence, build up solution, and keep on positively confronting various problems, even though you are not sure whether the solution is getting close to the answer or not.

Then, what kind of value can be the “attitude of pursuing” brought in a team, community, and society? It should be the “skill to persuade someone else” and “skill to be persuaded correctly”. For example, you have a goal to create a game as a professional. You want to acquire resources such as planning and development members, development environment, time and budget. You need to persuade colleagues, bosses and producers to acquire the resources. So, how are you going to persuade them? It will be difficult to persuade people even if you make a passionate speech with saying that “I somehow thought it is interesting” and “I just love it, anyhow”. People listened to your speech may think, “I don’t understand the reason how this game is getting popular”, “the idea seems to already exist”, “I wonder view of the world on a game is wanted by customers”, “it doesn’t maximize the performance of game machine”, “no prospect of development plan and commercialization can be seen”, and so on. You can’t acquire resources required for game creation without being able to answer all those questions clearly.

We want you to recognize that research, technical paper writing, and presentation in academic conferences you study and practice at graduate school are the foundation of skill to persuade people. Remember the ordinary structure of paper writing. Firstly, you interpret game history with your point of view, what kind of game people have created by now, how the game changed its history, how people felt by playing game, etc. and share the historical perspective of game with people who are explained. Taking the knowledge and recognition into account, you propose the idea of game to amuse people. If the historical perspective is shared properly, people who listened to your explanation will be spontaneously influenced by your idea in an unconscious state and accept your idea as if it is necessary. This is an ability to persuade. Next, you need to show that you have an ability to realize the idea of the new game. Unless you make well-prepared plan and show the ability to lead a team with actual results, your boss will not assign members for your team. Lastly, you need to show what and how the created game should be evaluated to utilize for the improvement at the next stage. By keeping players for long time with the effort to keep on revising and improving game persistently, the game can be recognized as the one to make people amuse.

If you could perform series of work steadily and present to people, they cannot help understanding and your proposal will be certainly adopted. This “ability to persuade” is the value in the society of attitude of pursuing. This ability will show an effect not only on proposal of new game, but also in every situation of professional works. Therefore, many people desire to acquire “attitude of pursuing”. The methodology to conduct research, write papers, and present in front of people explained here has been formed with that through trial and error over more than 500 years. A better way to persuade people may be developed in the future in theory. At this moment, I don’t know more effective attitude of pursuing than this way. When you certainly acquire the basic way to persuade people, you start applying it to practice in your own way. People say “Shuhari (that implies stages in improvement of practical ways)” and “Try in an unconventional manner”.

Let me tell you just one more thing. Imagine the case you are in the status of being persuaded. Let’s suppose you are in the position to judge whether you distribute your resources to a proposer of new game after listening to his/her proposal. You want to make a good judgment because the person may be your collaborator to develop a new game. So, what kind of information you need to know? As you know, if you get information about the contents that should be included in a technical paper out of the proposer, you can lead yourself to the most correct judgment. It means that you can acquire “ability to be persuaded correctly” if you acquire attitude of pursuing.

I hope all students to acquire attitude of pursuing through the research, paper writing, and presentation in academic conference studied and conducted at the graduate school of Future University Hakodate.
