A postgraduate course offers the opportunity to acquire specialized skills through extended study and research. Our students study Information Engineering, Complex Systems Science, Cognitive Science and Design from various angles and at a high level of expertise that develops their ability to succeed as researchers or as entrepreneurs.
The Systems and Information Science Course offers both a Master’s Degree Course and a Doctor’s Degree Course. Our study and research environment assists students to develop highly specialized skills over five years of endeavor in their chosen areas, which can be in “Media Architecture”, “Advanced ICT”, “Media Design”, Complex Information Science”, “Intelligent information Science”, or in interdisciplinary fields.
A special feature of our courses is the organic cooperation between faculty and researchers beyond their respective fields of study. Students have the opportunity to study under the guidance of highly qualified professors who are involved in innovative projects in cooperation with industries and local communities in Japan and around the world.
In the Master’s Degree Course the students receive a high level of education in their major subject and research guidance subject in five fields of research. Specific lectures are offered in each field, but the students are not restricted to study only in their primary research fields, and are encouraged to choose lectures in diverse areas. Further, it is possible for internship activity whose primary object is research to be credited towards a degree.
Our Graduate School education features a “Research Guidance” subject in which students study one given subject collectively in a small group whilst also pursuing individually their main research themes in Systems Information Science. In the study of the given subject, the students master practical methods of research and development under the guidance of their professor, and give group presentations. They also receive the fundamental basics of training on research techniques. For their concurrent Master’s thesis research, the students receive extended guidance and regular feedback.
Doctoral Course (PhD Course )
In the PhD course, the aim is to train independent-minded engineers who can demonstrate leadership and create high-level information systems. These engineers go on to promote research and development in their new research field of expertise.
Seminars are held on subjects selected by students, with the purpose of assisting them in mastering research techniques. Their research methods, directions and application are monitored and they are encouraged to think in depth and to conduct experiments to test and to find solutions to problems.
Special Research in Systems Information Science
Each PhD student receives detailed and elaborate personal guidance. They are advised on how to set up the theme of their research, how to proceed, how to make a research plan, how to become skilled in self-evaluation and how to make a detailed presentation at an academic conference. The aim is to produce talented researchers with the skills and knowledge to demonstrate real ability in research and development, and with the self-awareness to display independent thinking.
