I didn't join the Advanced ICT Practice course in my first year, and when I tried to join in my second year, they weren't accepting new students due to COVID-19. I thought, "What am I going to do when I graduate?", so I decided to join the Advanced ICT Course and Advanced ICT Practice course in my third year, thinking, "I might as well fall into the valley once." I thought that if I joined a group of really strong students, I might be able to rise to a passing grade.
One of the best things about joining the Advanced ICT course was the frequent opportunities for feedback. As I progressed through the years, I had fewer opportunities to have my code reviewed, but it was a valuable experience to receive feedback on things like presentation slides for exercises and research, and the schedules I wrote. I became a leader sooner than expected, which reduced my opportunities to write code, but since becoming a Graduate School student, I've been able to develop my own projects and learn to write and understand code on my own. I probably wouldn't have done that personal development if I hadn't joined the Advanced ICT course. It was helpful during job interviews to be able to talk about both the results of my exercise team and the results of my personal development projects.
Since starting my job, I've only really done tests, but my experience in ICT might be helping me understand the atmosphere when a project is in trouble (laughs). To my juniors, I hope you'll participate in hackathons while you still have the motivation and time.
