Joint research and technology transfer
At Future University Hakodate, our fundamental approach to industry-academia collaboration is to discover and develop forward-looking themes and ideas that are always one step ahead of society, and to widely transfer these research results to society. We accept numerous joint research and commissioned research projects with a wide range of parties, including companies, local governments, industry associations, and civic groups. Consultation and Counseling
We offer consultations on a variety of topics, including "We have technical challenges," "We want to improve our R&D capabilities," "We are exploring the possibilities of new businesses," and "We want to solve social problems." Coordination of collaborative research and contract research, etc.
We organize collaborative and commissioned research projects with various organizations, including companies, local governments, NPOs, and schools, on issues where cooperation is possible. Depending on the case, a team consisting of one or more faculty members, students, or researchers from research institutions will be formed.
Forming medium- to long-term partnerships
Beyond project-based collaboration, we aim to build relationships that foster long-term social partnerships.
Collaborative research, commissioned research, and scholarship donations
There are three types of industry-academia collaboration mechanisms: "joint research," "contract research," and "scholarship donations."
Joint research
This research involves researchers from private companies and other organizations working on common issues on an equal footing with university faculty members.
"Joint research" refers to research conducted jointly by Future University Hakodate (hereinafter referred to as "the University") and companies, universities, etc., on an equal footing, with a common challenge. Alternatively, the University and companies, universities, etc. can share the research responsibilities.

STEP 01
Applications
If our university wishes to apply for "joint research" with a company or other university, please submit the attached "Joint Research Application Form" to our university.
STEP 02
Conclusion of the contract
The Center for University-Society Relations and Collaboration (CRC) Steering Committee within our university will review and approve the proposal, and a "joint research" agreement will be concluded with our university.
STEP 03
Payment of research funds
You will be required to pay the research funds to the designated financial institution based on the payment notice issued by the university.
STEP 04
Intellectual property rights such as patents
As a general rule, patent rights and other intellectual property rights at this university belong to the university. In cases of joint ownership between the university and companies, the respective shares are determined by the degree of each party's contribution to research. The implementation of patents will be carried out through consultation between the university and the companies.

Contract research
This is research conducted by university faculty members as part of their official duties, commissioned by private companies.
"Contract research" is research conducted by Future University Hakodate (hereinafter referred to as "the University") based on research topics proposed by companies and other organizations, with the companies bearing the research expenses. The University is then required to report the research results to the companies and other organizations.
Please note that "contract research" may be accepted only if it is deemed to be meaningful for the education and research of this university and is not likely to interfere with education and research.

STEP 01
Applications
Companies, universities, and other organizations wishing to apply to our university for commissioned research should submit the attached "Commissioned Research Application Form" to our university.
STEP 02
Conclusion of the contract
The Center for University-Society Relations and Collaboration (CRC) Steering Committee within our university will review and approve the proposal, after which a contract for commissioned research with our university will be concluded.
STEP 03
Payment of research funds
You will be required to pay the research funds to the designated financial institution based on the payment notice issued by the university.
STEP 04
Intellectual property rights such as patents
As a general rule, patent rights and other intellectual property rights at this university are treated as belonging to this university.

Scholarship donations
These are donations received by universities from private companies and individual benefactors to enhance academic research and education. Scholarship donations can be used to establish "endowed chairs" and "endowed research departments."
"Scholarship donations" are donations accepted by Future University Hakodate (hereinafter referred to as "the University") from companies, universities, etc., for the purpose of enhancing academic and research activities and encouraging scholarships. These donations can be designated for specific research fields or faculty members. Regarding the tax treatment of the donated amount, as a donation to a local government, corporations can deduct the entire amount as an expense, and individuals can deduct up to 25% of their income.
Main flow of scholarship donations
STEP 01
Applications
Companies and universities are invited to apply to donate to our university. When doing so, they must submit the attached "Scholarship Donation Application Form" to the university. Donations can be subject to conditions such as designating a specific research area or requiring a brief report on the research results.
STEP 02
Acceptance decision
Based on the attached "Guidelines for Handling Scholarship Donations," the Center for University-Society Relations and Collaboration (CRC) Steering Committee within the university will review the donation and decide whether to accept it.
Upon receiving a request from our university to make a donation, you will be asked to deposit the donation into the designated financial institution.
*This completes the procedures for companies and other organizations, but you will need to apply for tax exemption using the donation receipt.

Track record of securing external research funding
The Center for University-Society Relations and Collaboration (CRC) also provides support for faculty members in obtaining external research funding, protecting the intellectual property of research results, and facilitating technology transfer.
