FINESSE

FINESSE is a system that carries out search and planning in the game of Bridge. It has a set of tactics that controls the search when looking for good ways to play individual suits. It then uses a general resource-based planning technique to piece these plans together.

FINESSE is very, very good at single-suit play. For example, the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge contains a set of over 650 such problems, chosen for their coverage. FINESSE can solve all of these problems, and also uncover 14 errors in the model solutions. It is thus the first system to consistently play at and above expert level on a significant aspect of Bridge card play. It is currently being extended to allow its use as a tutoring system.
