Abstract:

This paper gives an overview of research into the game Bridge, surveying the published literature on both the bidding and the card play phases of the game, and also discussing commercial programs. The main conclusion to be drawn is that although expert-level performance has been achieved in the problem of Bridge bidding, the overall standard of computer Bridge play in general is very low. In our conclusions, we briefly suggest why this may be so.
