FINESSE

MIKE

Tactics in FINESSE

Rather than planning Bridge play by considering all the possible combinations of cards, human players look for commomly occurring patterns that fit the current situation.
For example, North may hold the Ace and Queen, while South holds the 2. With these cards, there are three choices: play the Queen, Ace, or 2. Playing the Queen always produces one trick. Playing (cashing) the Ace has a very small chance of producing 2 tricks. Playing the 2 and then inserting the Queen only if West plays low wins 2 tricks whenever West has the King.
The name of the play of the 2 towards the Queen in this example (a `finesse of the Queen') gives the system its name. Altogether, FINESSE has seven tactics, four of them types of finesse.
