Future University Hakodate has practiced open learning while utilizing open spaces since its establishment in 2000. The school building is a masterpiece of Mr. YAMAMOTO Riken, the winner of the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel Prize in Architecture, and has an open design featuring all-glass walls and a huge atrium space. In the spirit of “open space, open mind.”, we work on research education aiming to pioneer a new academic field, “Systems Information Science”.
Future University Hakodate aims at being the university with practical skills to update systems information science based on diversity, and create better society and future by information science and information technology for upcoming 25th anniversary in 2025. In particular, we are trying to make work and research environments even better with recognizing the importance of diversity equity and inclusion (DE&I). As part of our measures to achieve this goal, we start accepting applications from females only.
Future University Hakodate has faculty and staff members with diverse identities, although it is a single-faculty college of informatics. For example, a wide range of research areas related to Systems and Information including IT Systems, Information Design, Cognitive Psychology, Communication, Brain Science, Life Science, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Data Science are available in the university. The faculty members in different research areas organize groups to practice cross-disciplinary collaboration of new research fields such as Marine IT, Medical IT, and Museum IT. Moreover, pioneering educational methods including project-based learning (PBL) that faculty members in different research areas and nationalities organize groups to guide students for one year are adopted to support the development of students in the spirit of “open space, open mind.”
Hakodate is widely known as an attractive and cozy place to live. Access to transportation from our campus to the airport and to the station of Shinkansen is good, and collaborations with other educational and research institutes are active. The educational and research activities are further enhanced through the collaboration with Hokkaido University Fisheries Sciences, Hakodate Campus of Hokkaido University of Education, and Hakodate College of National Institute of Technology. In addition, Hakodate City has a variety of childcare support measures.
We are waiting for the enthusiastic applicants who work on research and education for diverse people and societies, create new innovation, and design Future University Hakodate for the future with us, and who are willing to take on new challenges together in the special environment of Hakodate.
