Admission Policy

With the motto Open Space, Open Mind, Future University Hakodate (FUN) aims to foster students in five main areas: (1) Systems Information Science; (2) problem finding and solving; (3) communication and teamwork; (4) autonomous learning; (5) the Humanities.

Based on the aims above, FUN offers a core curriculum, communication courses, school-common subjects，department-specific subjects, and course-specific subjects so that the students can obtain a strong academic foundation in their major. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on problem-solving skills, communication skills, and autonomous learning attitudes through training, discussion, field work and project learning. As a culmination of their undergraduate education, students write a graduation thesis and present their research.

Therefore, FUN expects students to have following qualities and abilities:

the necessary academic skills to study at FUN;
a strong interest and curiosity in Systems Information Science;
motivation to contribute to future society by cultivating computational thinking, and effectively collecting and interpreting information.

(Basic Policy of Student Selection)

FUN accepts students with a strong motivation for learning, and adopts various selection methods for applicants.
FUN focuses on quality and ability of each person and never discriminates on individual attribute.

Student selection is taken place for both departments all together. Students are assigned to each department and course when they advance to the second year. In the case of transfer, student selection is taken place in each department.

General Entrance Examination (1st Term)　

The necessary academic skills and knowledge in Science, Math, and languages, and logical thinking skills to study at FUN are evaluated.

(Screening method)

[Outline] It is the entrance exam to test necessary comprehensive academic skills to study at FUN by Standardized University Entrance Exam and Individual Academic Achievement Test.

[Standardized University Entrance Exam] Tests of 4 subjects including Japanese, Math, Science, Foreign Language (English written/listening tests) are given to examine the academic achievements with focusing on Science, Math, and languages.

[Individual Academic Achievement Test] Tests of Math for basic Math/Science and English are given to examine the academic skills. In the Math test, logical, correct and accurate writing skills in addition to knowledge, techniques, thinking skills, judgment skills, and expressive skills, and in the English test, abilities to understand and convey information and thinking with uniquely focusing on questions and issues are evaluated.

[Pass/Fail decision] Successful applicants are selected in the descending order of the total score of Standardized University Entrance Exam and Individual Academic Achievement Test.

General Entrance Examination (2nd Term)

The necessary high academic skills in Science, Math, and languages to study at FUN are evaluated.

(Screening method)

[Outline] It is the entrance exam to test necessary comprehensive academic skills to study at FUN by Standardized University Entrance Exam.

[Pass/Fail decision] Successful applicants are selected in the descending order of the score of Standardized University Entrance Exam.

Comprehensive Entrance Exam

A strong interest in Systems Information Science and the necessary basic academic skills and knowledge in Science, Math, and languages to study at FUN are evaluated.
Outstanding thinking /judgment/expressive skills，independent and consistent motivation for studying by cooperating with various people, outstanding academic skills and techniques, past performances, and social experiences linked with studying Systems Information Science are evaluated by interview.

(Screening method)

[Outline] It is the entrance exam to test basic academic skills by aptitude test and a strong interest in Systems Information Science and concrete performances as a basis of self-recommendation by interview.

[Aptitude test] Written tests are given to test whether applicants have necessary basic skills of Science and Math in the comprehensive questions A and language understanding/expression in the comprehensive questions B to study at FUN.

[Interview] Thinking skills, judgment skills, expressive skills，identity, and aptitude to study at FUN are tested by presentation and interactive interview. In the interactive interview, application documents including reason for application and confidential report are used.

[Pass/Fail decision] Successful applicants are selected by comprehensive evaluation of aptitude test and interview.

Entrance Exam on School Recommendation

It is the entrance exam for high school students who are recommended by their principals based on their outstanding academic skills and aptitudes to study at FUN.
A strong interest in Systems Information Science and the necessary basic academic skills and knowledge in Science, Math, and languages to study at FUN are evaluated.
Outstanding thinking skills, judgment skills, and expressive skills，independent and consistent motivation for studying by cooperating with various people are evaluated by interview.
As the mission of a public university, FUN accepts students from designated high schools in the region, local and national constituencies to provide higher education opportunity in the region and plays a role as an intellectual/cultural base.

(Screening method)

[Outline] It is the entrance exam to test basic academic skills by aptitude test and necessary skills and aptitude to study at FUN by interview.

[Aptitude test] Written tests are given to test whether applicants have necessary basic skills of Science and Math in the comprehensive questions Ⅰ and language understanding/expression in the comprehensive questions Ⅱ to study at FUN.

[Interview] Thinking skills, judgment skills, expressive skills，identity, and aptitude to study at FUN are tested by interactive interview. In the interactive interview, application documents including reason for application and confidential report are used.

[Pass/Fail decision] Successful applicants are selected by comprehensive evaluation of aptitude test and interview for those from local/national constituencies, and by interview evaluation for those from designated high schools.

Transfer Entrance Examination

A strong interest in Systems Information Science and the necessary basic academic skills and knowledge in Science, Math, and languages after transfer, and basic knowledge and skills in specific field are evaluated.

Outstanding thinking skills, judgment skills, and expressive skills，independent and consistent motivation for studying by cooperating with various people are evaluated by interview.
Special selection is taken place to ensure the opportunity to study at university for the students of National Colleges of Technology in the region.

※In the transfer entrance exam, student selection is taken place in each department and assigned to a course after passing the exam.

(Screening method)

[Outline] It is the entrance exam to test necessary and sufficient academic skills, knowledge, and logical thinking to transfer to FUN by Academic Achievement Test and interview.

[Academic Achievement Test] Tests of Math, Information and written English are given to examine necessary academic skills for transfer and basic knowledge in specific field.

[Interview] Interactive interview is given to test thinking/judgment/expressive skills and independent motivation through the conversation with interviewers.

[Pass/Fail decision] Successful applicants are selected by comprehensive evaluation of academic achievement and interview for those taking general transfer entrance exam, and by interview evaluation for those taking special selection.

(Special entrance exam for international students)

[Outline] Special entrance exam is taken place for international transfer students. The international student here is defined as the person who already has or going to have a status of residence of “College Student” specified in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law at the time of admission.

[Screening method] Necessary and sufficient academic skills, knowledge, and logical thinking to transfer to FUN are evaluated by Academic Achievement Test and interview. The contents of the tests are same as General Entrance Exam.

[Screening of Eligibility for Application] Pre-screening of eligibility for application including academic history and Japanese-Language proficiency is taken place.
