Faculty Introduction

TAKEGAWA, Yoshinari

Professor

Message for Students

My research into the development of physical skills makes use of technology from a wide range of fields, such as HCI(Human Computer Interaction), cognitive psychology, educational technology, skill science, machine learning, signal processing and robotics. Future University Hakodate is home to open-minded professor specialising in every kind of technology, as well as some whose research crosses multiple fields, and these professors will willingly share their technology and knowledge, setting you on the fast track to acquiring the necessary skills to progress your research. Furthermore, simply walking around campus you are sure to encounter stimulating research and developments that could provide a hint for your own work. Future University Hakodate boasts the ideal people and enviroment to enable you to conduct pioneering research. Let’s do research that will give the world something to talk about!

Research Contents

I conduct research into supporting human learning using IT. This research does not aim to improve the learning rate of academic subjects such as mathematics, but rather to support the general learning of skills involved in activities such as piano-playing, calligraphy, English conversation and singing. I am working to create new kinds of support from which the user can ultimately become independent, in the same way as children learning to cycle remove their stabilisers once they are competent. Examples of this work include using projection mapping to display performace support information on a piano keyboard and using devices (such as the iPad) to create a calligraphy support system that promotes correct character balance. I am also conducting research into ‘creating a new mirror’: technologies that allow the user to check aspects of their skill which it had previously been difficult to self assess, such as the correct timing of spiking the ball in volleyball, or correct distribution of bodyweight in snowboarding. Finally, I am interested in new methods of recording observations and techniques for the practice of activites such as sports and music, and systems that provide a new learning experience that enables users to aquire skills in a fun and simple way.

Attractive Factors of My Research

What really makes me glad that I’m doing the research I am, is the moment when, with the support of one of my proposed systems, a learner is finally able to accomplish something that they had previously thought to be difficult or impossible. Seeing the bright enthusiasm of someone eager to learn and practice more makes me glad to have developed the technology that enables them to do so. My research isn’t just about how one uses one’s intelligence (for example, effectivley acquiring knowledge), but also about how one uses one’s body (for example, aquiring skills to perform correct movement), and heart (for example, maintining motivation or obtaining a sense of accomplishment). It is vital to consider problems from these various aspects. I believe the attractiveness of my research lies in the fact that students can work in a way that combines the logical and analytical mind of a researcher, the sensitive heart of an artist, and the active body of a sportsman.
