研究内容
画像処理とアルゴリズムの研究をしています。その中でも現在は主に、古文書のような難読文書画像に対する情報処理システムの開発を行っています。

研究の魅力
自分で手を動かして何かを明らかにしていくのが好きです。とくに情報系の研究は、コンピュータさえあれば思いついたことをすぐに試してみることができるのが大きな魅力だと思います。「思いつく」→「試してみる」→「成功して大喜び、または失敗してがっかり」というサイクルを日々楽しんでいます。
実績
「文書画像検索システム」は上記URLで公開されているほか、民間企業とのライセンス契約により市販ソフトとしても商品化されています。さらに、このシステムを利用したウェブサービスも提供が開始されています。また、他大学の文学部の先生との連携プロジェクトにも参画しており、このシステムが実際の人文学の研究の場で役立てられています。
画像の研究の中で編み出した手法をアルゴリズムの研究として一般化した論文 “Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search for a Dataset of Normalized Vectors,” は、平成21年度 2009 電子情報通信学会論文賞を受賞しました。

Research Contents
My research interests contain image processing, information retrieval, and algorithm. Currently, I am mainly engaged in developping the computer systems for the document images that are hardly machine-readable, such as historical brush-written documents.
The product “document image retrieval system”, the word spotting engine applicable via the Internet, is published at http://records.c.fun.ac.jp/.

Attractive Factors of My Research
For the study of computer science, all I need is just a computer. I can try my ideas freely and can get a result immediately. Get an idea, try it, and be happy or unhappy depending on the result — isn’ t it a pleasure?
Achievements
The online word spotting engine is published for three applications. First one is the website http://records.c.fun.ac.jp/. Second one is the commercial software released by a publisher. Last one is the web service released by another company. In addition, we are making collaborating with humanity researches and trying to apply information technology to the study of humanities.
The paper “Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search for a Dataset of Normalized Vectors” recieved the IEICE Best Paper Award 2009.
