本会議の開催は、本学の研究活動を世界に発信するとともに、函館における国際学術交流の推進に寄与する機会となりました。
International Conference “PERSUASIVE 2026” Held in Future University Hakodate (First Time in Japan)
From March 10 to 14, 2026, the 21st International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2026) was held in Future University Hakodate. This conference focuses on information technologies that support behavior change (Persuasive Technology), and this was the first time the conference has been held in Japan.
The conference was held jointly with ABC 2026 (Affective Behavior Change Conference 2026). Professor Kaoru Sumi (Department of Media Architecture) of our university served as General Chair of Persuasive2026 and ABC2026. For PERSUASIVE 2026, Professor Yasuyuki Sumi (Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems) served as Publicity Chair, and Researcher Ahmed Salem served as Proceedings Chair, contributing to the organization and operation of PERSUASIVE 2026.
The conference program included workshops on March 10, the main conference from March 11 to 13, and an excursion on March 14. A total of 130 researchers and students from 20 countries across five continents participated. Together, the two conferences had more than 200 participants. The conference featured presentations and discussions on the latest research in fields such as artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction, and behavioral science, fostering active academic exchange among participants. The conference also included keynote talks by Professor Catherine Pelachaud and Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, which attracted significant interest from participants and stimulated lively discussions. The conference proceedings were published by Springer and became the largest volume in the history of the PERSUASIVE conference series.
Researchers from our university delivered three presentations at the conference. Among them, a paper by Professor Yasuyuki Sumi and Mr. Ryusuke Hioki, a graduate of our university, was accepted through the conference’s rigorous peer-review process (acceptance rate: 24%). In addition, a joint research presentation by Researcher Ahmed Salem and Professor Kaoru Sumi was also presented. Furthermore, students from our university participated as student volunteers, supporting the operation of the international conference and gaining valuable opportunities to interact with researchers from around the world.
Hosting this conference provided an important opportunity to share our university’s research activities with the global research community and to promote international academic exchange in Hakodate.
